The Afeela EV Is Dead in the Water — Sony and Honda Effectively Scrap Their Joint Project

The Afeela, the joint EV venture by Sony and Honda that once stole the show at CES, has been indefinitely postponed, effectively shelving the project.

A Grand Entrance, Followed by a Quiet Exit

In January 2023, the world's largest consumer electronics and IT expo, CES, held in Las Vegas, was buzzing about a new electric vehicle. It was the Afeela, unveiled by Sony Honda Mobility, a joint venture between Sony and Honda.

The concept of combining Sony's software and content expertise as an entertainment company with Honda's manufacturing and hardware prowess as an automotive giant was truly groundbreaking. An interactive display built into the front, PlayStation integration, and sleek design. The industry's reaction at the announcement was electric.

But in just a few years, the mood had completely reversed.

What Went Wrong

1. Endless Delays in the Launch Schedule

Sony Honda Mobility initially set a target of launching in the North American market in 2026. However, battery supply chain issues, software development delays, and a sharp slowdown in North American EV demand all converged, pushing the timeline back again and again.

Eventually, the company changed its launch date to "TBD", which most observers interpret as an indefinite postponement.

2. A Cooling EV Market

The Afeela was conceived during 2022-2023, the peak of the EV boom. But the market cooled rapidly afterward.

  • Rising EV inventory and price wars in the U.S.
  • Tesla's stock plunge and sales slump
  • Legacy automakers like GM and Ford scaling back EV investments

The window for a latecomer like Afeela was narrowing by the day.

3. A Clash of Strategic Priorities Between Sony and Honda

There are also analyses suggesting the two companies' visions pointed in different directions.

Sony defined the EV as a "rolling entertainment platform" and wanted to focus on monetizing software and content. Honda, on the other hand, prioritized quality, safety, and practical driving performance, as you would expect from a traditional automaker.

According to multiple industry insiders, this gap became a persistent obstacle to collaboration throughout the development process.

Honda Goes Its Own Way

While the Afeela project was faltering, Honda accelerated its independent EV strategy.

Honda announced its 2026-2030 EV transition roadmap, previewing a new lineup of EVs built on its own platform. Internal consensus reportedly grew that redirecting resources tied up in Sony Honda Mobility back to Honda's core business was the better move.

Where Does Sony Go From Here?

For Sony, the Afeela was never just an EV business. It was a strategic move to stake a claim in the new category of "mobility entertainment."

With the project effectively halted, Sony is reportedly exploring a pivot to B2B, supplying in-vehicle entertainment technology to other automakers. PlayStation integration technology, spatial audio, and in-vehicle AR interfaces could survive through partnerships with other car brands.

Lessons Left Behind

The Afeela's failure is not merely the demise of one EV model. It is a case study in the real-world challenges that arise when two giant companies from completely different industries attempt "convergence."

  • Automobiles, unlike software, are subject to tight physical constraints and safety regulations.
  • The distance between a "good idea" and a "product that sells" is long and treacherous.
  • Of the countless startups and joint projects that rode the EV boom, only a handful have survived.

In a global EV market where Tesla stands alone and BYD surges with a flood of Chinese-made vehicles, there may never have been a place for the Afeela.

"Sony knows games, Honda knows cars. But building a 'car you ride like a game' together turned out to be far harder than anyone imagined."

Note: Official announcements regarding the Afeela project can be found through Sony Honda Mobility's official channels.
